Gábor Náray-Szabó awarded the "In memoriam Gábor Dénes" Diploma

 
Speaker of the Parliament Béla Katona presented the "In memoriam Gábor Dénes" Diploma of the Novofer Foundation to Prof. Gábor Náray-Szabó, Director General of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, for his generous professional and moral support contributing in the last decade to the cultivation of the memory of Nobel laureate Dennis Gabor and the realization of joint programs.

The festive occasion of December 17, 2009, gave opportunity to the presentation of the Library's new Dennis Gabor home page.

Ágnes Téglási appointed Deputy Director General

Having accepted her refereed application to the position with the consent of the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Director General of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences appointed Dr. Ágnes Téglási Deputy Director General of the Library until December 31, 2014.

The Oriental Collection releases The Mongolian Grammar of Gábor Bálint

The Oriental Collection of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce the publication of the latest title in its Oriental Reprints book series,

Gábor Bálint of Szentkatolna's A Romanized Grammar of the East- and West-Mongolian Languages: With Popular Chrestomathies of Both Dialects,

edited and introduced by Ágnes Birtalan, head of the Department of Inner Asian Studies (Eötvös Loránd University).

This is the first title in the Collection's publication project that aims at putting out some invaluable documents in the Gábor Bálint of Szentkatolna Bequest now preserved at the Department of Manuscripts & Rare Books. Forthcoming is Bálint's collection of Mongolian (Kalmyk and Khalkha) texts, to be printed in the same book series.

Hours of operation for the upcoming holiday season

The Library will be closed from December 24, 2009, to January 3, 2010. In addition, we would like to call the attention of our patrons to the following information regarding the hours of operation for the upcoming holiday season.

December 18, 2009, Friday: The Library's Main Reading Room will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Archives of the Academy and the Special Collections will close at 4:00 p.m.

December 19, 2009, Saturday: The Library's Main Reading Room will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Archives of the Academy and the Special Collections will close at 1:00 p.m.

December 23, 2009, Wednesday: The Library's Main Reading Room will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Archives of the Academy and the Special Collections will close at 12:00 p.m.

December 24, 2009, Thursday: all units of the Library will be closed.

January 4, 2010, Monday: first day of normal operation in the New Year.

The Oxford English Dictionary Online now available at the Library

 
From December 1, 2009, the Library offers access to the electronic version of the

Oxford English Dictionary.

The OED is accessible from within our IP-range. Patrons using their own portable computers will also be able to connect to the database via the wireless access points (WAPs) deployed in the Main Reading Room and in the Department of Manuscripts & Rare Books.

The electronic Der Neue Pauly/Brill's New Pauly now available at the Library

 
 
From December 1, 2009, the Library offers access to Koninklijke Brill NV's classical studies database, Der Neue Pauly: Enzyklopädie der Antike. Das klassische Altertum und seine Rezeptionsgeschichte (Antike: A–Z and RWG: A–Z) and its English version, Brill's New Pauly: Encyclopedia of the Ancient World (Antiquity, vols. 1–14: A–Tub and Classical Tradition, vol. 1–4: A–Rul).

The electronic database contains the full text of the abridged and revised edition (1996–2003) of the monumental undertaking of August Friedrich Pauly (1796–1845), Georg Wissowa (1859–1931) and other classical scholars, the Realencyclopädie der Classischen Altertumswissenschaft (1894–1980).

Patrons using their own portable computers will also be able to connect to the database via the wireless access points (WAPs) deployed in the Main Reading Room and in the Department of Manuscripts & Rare Books.

The hard copies of the 83-volume original Realencyclopädie and the 18-volume Neue Pauly are available on the open shelves in the Library's Main Reading Room.

Giants of Science exhibition extended

 
 
The Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is pleased to inform you that the exhibition

Giants of Science: Alexander Csoma de Kőrös and János Bolyai in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register,

due to close tomorrow, has been extended until November 27, 2009. Rarely put on public display, the documents from Alexander Csoma de Kőrös's literary and scholarly bequest and János Bolyai's authorial copy of his Appendix can be visited for another week, Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the Library's ground-floor Vasarely Room (H-1051 Budapest, Arany János u. 1).

Giants of Science: An Exhibition

The Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is pleased to invite you to the opening ceremony of its exhibition,

Giants of Science: Alexander Csoma de Kőrös and János Bolyai in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register,

organized on the occasion of the recent inclusion in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register of two of the Library's treasures, Alexander Csoma de Kőrös's (1784?–1842) literary and scholarly bequest and János Bolyai's (1802–1860) authorial copy of his Appendix.

The exhibition will be opened by Prof. Gyula Wojtilla, DSc and Tibor Ács, DSc

A welcome speech will be given by Prof. Gábor Náray-Szabó, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Director General of the Library

Venue: Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (H-1051, Budapest, Arany Jánus u. 1), Vasarely Room
Date: November 5, 2009. 4:00 p.m.
