Combining material sciences with traditional philology to enhance our understanding of the creation and history of a manuscript
Manuscript Kaufmann A50 of the Mishna is one of the most famous manuscripts in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
It is particularly famous for its vocalization that was prepared following the consonantal text of a different manuscript as the countless differences demonstrate. But where and when was the vocalization made? Paleography can only date and localize consonants, not Tiberian vowels. It is agreed that the vocalizer was not one of the two main scribes of the consonantal text. Can we correlate the vowels to one of the numerous scribes that wrote marginal annotations and corrections and then use paleography to provenance it? As we have hundreds of marginal annotations in dozens of different scripts, optical comparison of the ink color alone is not sufficient.
An XRF-ink analysis gives a much more precise estimation of the elemental composition of the different ink types used. This will also help to correlate different annotations and corrections in the margins and the main text or to decide whether this or that correction in the main text was written in the same ink as the main text or not.
Ira Rabin and Oliver Hahn, the very experienced team from the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung in Berlin and the Center for the Study of Manuscript Cultures in Hamburg are performing this analysis in conjunction with the palaeographers Judith Olszowy-Schlanger and Daniel Stökl Ben Ezra from the École pratique des hautes études in Paris.
