Holiday Closings

 
During the winter holidays our library will be closed from the 24th of December until the 3rd of January. From the 4th of January library will operate according to the regulations in force since the 11th of November.

From the 2nd of November (Monday), on weekdays, the library's main reading room will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and will be closed on Saturdays. The opening hours of our special collections are unchanged.

Returning to regular opening hours

 
From 24th August (Monday), the Main Reading Room will once again be available from 9 am to 8 pm (Monday - Friday), and 9 am to 5 pm (Saturday).

The Archives will also reopen: 10 am – 3 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday), and 10 am 1:00 pm (Friday); please make a reservation in advance at „hay . diana [at] konyvtar . mta . hu” The Archives remain closed on Wednesdays.

We have placed self-service wardrobes

 
For the convenience and safety of our readers, we have placed self-service wardrobes in the lobby. The lockers work with a 100 forint coin, which is returned after use, when the key is replaced.

Re-opening schedule for the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

 
After the long period of closure, our services will be re-launched in two phases.

As a first step, books will be available for loan once again, and soon after our reading rooms will reopen for on-site use, observing the rules of social distancing. The Library will not close for the summer this year.

All library cards valid on 1st March, 2020 have been renewed automatically for an extra three months. You can check the status of your library card, personal data, loans and requests via the online catalogue. If your library card has expired, please contact us at mtak [at] konyvtar . mta . hu. Registration fees can only be paid in cash.

Until further notice, please wear a mask or cover your mouth and nose with a scarf when entering the Library, and use the hand sanitizer available at the entrance of the Reading Room. Please also make sure you always keep at least 150 cm distance from other people.


Main Reading Room

1st phase – from Wednesday, 24th June, 2020 – Borrowing and returning books

Services will be available with certain restrictions and shorter opening hours.

Loan requests can be placed only through the online catalogue. Please do not request more than five items at a time and always wait for our feedback before coming to the library to collect them. Make sure you do not place a hold request for on-site use.

This service will be made available from 8 am on 24th June, 2020.

Books can be picked up in the Main Reading Room from Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm, and on Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm.

At the loan desk one person will be served at a time. If you have books to return, place them in the drop-box by the desk. To speed up the process, please keep your library card at hand and do not linger in the reading room.

The current range of services our library has been delivering remains in place: registered readers may request an electronic copy of journal articles and book chapters from our main collection up to a maximum of 30 pages free of charge.

2nd phase – from Monday, 6th July, 2020 – On-site use

The Main Reading Room will reopen for on-site use, observing the rules of social distancing.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm.


Oriental Collection, Department of Manuscripts & Rare Books

1st phase - from Wednesday, 24th June, 2020

Books for loan from the Oriental Collection can be requested via e-mail at keleti [at] konyvtar . mta . hu; details of delivery will be sent in our reply.

On-site use is not yet available.

2nd phase – from Monday, 6th July, 2020

The Collections are available for on-site use, observing the rules of social distancing. Due to the restricted number of available seats, please make a reservation via e-mail or phone in advance. Opening hours: same as before the pandemic (Mon-Thur 9 am - 4 pm, Fri 9 am – 1:30 pm).


Archives of the Academy

The Archives remains closed until 23rd August, 2020.

Due to the epidemic situation, our reading rooms remain closed, all on-site services are still suspended. The current relaxation measures do not apply to libraries.
We continue monitoring any new directives and official recommendations regarding the situation. We are planning a phased re-opening, but no exact date has been determined yet.

Mapping COVID-19 research in context

 
In the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic scientific knowledge production into this new phenomenon has gained a long unprecedented impetus.
To support research Pro Sharp Hungary and the Department of Science Policy and Scientometrics within the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences published on Mapping COVID-19 research in context portal (DOI: 10.14755/COVIDSCIMAP) the outcome of a research project to undertake a large-scale mapping of the rapidly growing scientific literature associated with COVID-19 research.
The portal's main aim is to facilitate discovery and synthesis by various informative analyses of the scientific knowledge base that can be linked to the pandemic, in the broadest possible sense. The research group uses, primarily but not exclusively, bibliometric mapping methods to reveal how the literature is being organized, providing intuitive and effortless options to navigate through the most relevant knowledge claims. The data source currently used for the research is the Web of Science databases.

Roland Eötvös in Heidelberg

 
On February 10, 2020, the European Physical Society To support research Pro Sharp Hungary and the Department of Science Policy and Scientometrics within the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences published on that Dutch historian of science Dr. Henk Kubbinga has located a small set of documents related to Baron Roland Eötvös’s doctorate in physics at the archives of Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg.
The documents will be published by the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in its electronic repository.
The most interesting piece of the set is a handwritten autobiography of Roland Eötvös in Latin, which will also be made available in a Hungarian translation by Gábor Tóth, librarian at the Library’s Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books.
This is not the only result of last year’s Eötvös 100 project. Member of the Leibniz Society and honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Hainz Kautzleben recently assessed the scientific achievements of Eötvös and a memorial to Eötvös is soon to be erected in South Tyrol.
