LIBER Journées events at Library and Information Centre of the Academy

The Library and Information Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences hosted the LIBER Journées between 18-20 May

The three-day seminar for senior library executives was attended by academic and research library leaders from 11 different European countries and Canada. The active exchange of opinion was inspired by speakers from all over the world. The chair of the seminar was Norbert Lossau, Vice-President of the University of Göttingen, and the speakers included Anja Smit from Utrecht, who is also member of the LIBER Executive Board, Liz Jolly, Chief Librarian of the British Library, Mark E. Hauber ornitologist from the University of Illinois, Eva Mendez from the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, and Benedikt Fecher from the Humboldt Institute. István Szabó, Deputy Chairman of NKFIH, spoke about the system of Hungarian research support and the support of open science. The face-to-face meetings and conversations were joined by two online speakers, Roxanne Missingham, Director General of the National Library of Australia, and Ann Thornton, Head of Library at Columbia University.

The theme of the LIBER Journées was the relationship of libraries to open science, their opportunities and tasks. Participants emphasized that the role of libraries as intermediaries has increased, and with their tasks constantly changing, a much greater emphasis should be on collaboration and continuous, multi-directional communication.

LIBER (Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche - Association of European Research Libraries) was personally represented by Julian Roche, Vice-President of the Association, Astrid Verheusen, Executive Director of the Association, Andreas Brandtner, Member of the Steering Committee and Hilde van Kiel, Head of the Leadership Working Group.

Preliminary topics and organizational work were provided by Liisi Lembinen, Najmeh Shaghaei and Catriona Cannon in addition to colleagues from the Library and Information Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The LIBER Journées is a tailored scientific programme designed for 20-25 Library Directors who are already in leadership positions in their institutions and who are looking ahead at delivering strategic change as libraries and institutions redefine themselves in an ever-changing information and social environment.

The LIBER Journées brings participants together with eminent global speakers for a stimulating, interactive and strategic programme, addressing major challenges that face us all. This seminar concentrates on strategic matters and challenges which may be illustrated by operational matters and practical examples.

The 2022 theme is Leading Libraries in the World of Openness.

The focus will be on the role of the Director in leading library services and provision in rapidly changing digital, research and educational environments and within a developing trend towards shared — and even outsourced — services.
