The expedition of 1879 – Hungarian Explorers in Dunhuang
On the 8 th of August an exhibition titled Re-collections: the expedition of 1879 – Hungarian Explorers in Dunhuang was opened in Dunhuang (Gansu, China). Organized by the Oriental Collection of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (curator Dr. Ágnes Kelecsényi) it was to commemorate the 140 th anniversary of the East Asian Expedition (1878- 1880) led by Béla Széchenyi, and the activity of one of the most known archaeological explorer of the Silk Road, Sir Aurel Stein. The exhibits revive Dunhuang of the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries and the paramount role Hungarian scholars and travellers played in the geographic and cultural description of this important city of the Silk Road and its most precious artistic ornament, the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas. The delegation headed by Prof. István Monok and Mr. Luo Huaqing, Director of the Dunhuang Research Institute has agreed upon the continuation of the cooperation. The parties intend to conclude an agreement in the near future.

MELCom International conference
The 40th conference of the European Association of Middle East Librarians (MELCom International) was held in our Library between 19-21 June, 2018.
In addition to the conference presentations, the almost 80 participants who arrived from 22 countries took part in guided tours in the Oriental Collection, the National Széchenyi Library and the Archdiocesan Library of Eger.
On June 26, 2018, all sections of the Library will be closed, due to network maintenance.

Usage of Lukács György' bequest
From June 1, 2018, Lukács György' bequest can be used in the Library and Information Centre of Hungarian Academy of Sciences: Please notify your visit’s appointment in advance. The requested manuscripts can be used in the reading room of the Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection (Budapest, Széchenyi tér 9.), the requested books can be used in the main reading room of the Library (Budapest, Arany János u. 1.) until the renovation of the Lukács Archives is finished. Please notify your visit’s appointment in advance.
After the renovation of Lukács's former apartment, we will provide a continuous duty to researchers during the opening hours of the Library and at professional events on site.

Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
On 27th April a contract of cooperation was signed by Mr. Ahmad Haji Hosseini, Deputy for Executive, Documentary and Library, Institute for Political and International Studies and Prof. Dr. István Monok, General Director, of LIC HAS in the Oriental Collection. The purpose of the cooperation is the publication of the Persian version of the Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which was compiled in collaboration with The Specialized Library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran (LPIS).
Hours of operation for the upcoming Easter holiday
The Library will be closed from 30th of March to 2nd of April , 2018. Normal operation will be resumed on April 3.

Cataloguing of György Lukács' bequest
Since György Lukács’s passing away in 1971, his bequest (his private collection of books, as well as his autographs and correspondence) has not been processed and catalogued according to current library standards. In order to address this long-standing deficiency, the Directorate of the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in agreement with the Praesidium of the Academy, has decided to have the bequest transferred to its main building for cataloguing. From March 1, 2018, Lukács’s former apartment will function as a museum until the commencement of restoration works on it.
The book collection will be made available to the public from December 31, 2018, and the autographs and correspondence from July 1, 2019. In the meantime, however, the latter can be studied in digital format upon prior request.

Thanks to the generous donation of the National Central Library of Taiwan and within the framework of our Taiwan Research Centre for Chinese Studies two new databases have become available in our Library. The databases are accessible within our IP-range.
