Kaufmann manuscripts restored

Thanks to a generous support from the Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe our Library managed to carry out the conservation of two exceptionally valuable manuscripts from the Kaufmann collection in the laboratories of the National Széchényi Library.

The richly illuminated Second Kaufmann Mishneh Torah (A 78/I–II), probably copied in Southwest Germany in 1310, is among the outstanding examples of medieval book art.

Despite its humble appearance, the other manuscript (A 494) is equally important. It contains letters and letter formularies written in Hebrew for the Italian Jewish community in the 16th and early 17th century. This small manuscript was on the verge of complete destruction because of severe ink corrosion. The conservators not only managed to rescue it, but also found its original parchment binding.
